Transmission Flush VS Transmission Fluid Change

One of the most common questions that arise in our mind regarding transmission service is whether we should choose transmission flush or get the transmission fluid change?

Let's start with understanding the importance of transmission in a car.

As we all know, the engine is a crucial part of any vehicle, but transmission is equally important too. The engine generates the power, which then gets distributed to the wheel through transmission.

Transmission is a complex mechanism consist of various gears and moving parts that produce heat during the operation. Transmission fluid helps keep the transmission cool and lubricates all the moving components to keep them in better shape for an extended period.

What is the difference between transmission fluid change and transmission flush?

In transmission fluid change, as per the manufacturer's recommendation, the mechanic drains the fluid from the transmission and refills it with fresh, new fluid. During this process, the mechanic can closely look at the oil filter and oil pan to check the presence of metal parts or debris that can cause huge damage to the transmission.

In the transmission flush process, the mechanic uses the particular machine to change the fluid, plus the old sap, dirt and sludge get pushed out of the transmission under pressure.

What is the sign of issues with transmission fluid?

Several possibilities indicate your vehicle's transmission needs maintenance, out of which the most common transmission issue is Gear slipping. If you notice the increase in the RPM, even if you are not accelerating, that is because of clogging of transmission fluid. In technical terms, it is called transmission slipping. Getting your vehicle inspected is highly recommended in such a case.

Is it okay to drive around with a transmission fluid issue?

Changing a transmission fluid as per the manufacturer's suggested interval of time is a part of preventive maintenance. Skipping the recommended schedule maintenance can cause a more expensive repair over a period.

It depends on the make of your vehicle and also as recommended in the owner's manual. On some cars, changing fluid is considered a part of preventive maintenance and on some transmission flush. Although, transmission flush is only required if there are any signs of debris in the fluid.

How often should transmission fluid be replaced?

The best way to know the correct answer is through the owner's manual. However, the milage range varies for both manual and automatic transmission. For manual, it is suggested to have the transmission fuel replace at every 30,000-60,000 miles (approx 48,000-95,000 km) and for automatic transmission at every 60,000-100,000 miles (approx 95,000-160,000kms)

Does your vehicle need transmission fluid change? Not sure?

Special note for VW Owners. As recommended by the manufacturer, a Volkswagen vehicle equipped with manual transmission requires no oil change. Volkswagen cars with Automatic or DSG gearbox transmission fluid change mileage range varies upon the model and year.
